What You’ll Need

Before we get into the recipes, let’s list out what you’ll need.

Basically, making cannabis infused bath salts has two parts.

  • The first part is making an infused oil.

  • The second part is to use the oil you infused with Epsom salts to finally create your canna-bath.

If you are making infused oils for other purposes like tinctures, topicals, or edibles, you’re in good shape because the same oil can be used for canna-bath.

Knowing how to make lots of useful health and beauty products you’ll love using every day and sharing with your friends empowers your DIY practice and allows you to #MakeTakeShare to your heart’s content!

To Make an Infused Oil You’ll Need:

  • An edible oil like olive, avocado, or coconut or a vegetable oil will also totally work.

  • dried cannabis or hemp flowers, shake, trim, or kief (try Horn Creek Hemp for CBD & CBG and your local dispensary for THC)

To Make Canna-Bath You’ll Need:

  • Infused Oil

  • Epsom salts (pick a pre-scented salt to save time! I like Dr. Teals)

 Optional:

  • Pink Himalayan Salt – handy for adding color to Layers of Love

  • Essential Oils – Skip this by buying pre-scented salts

  • Fresh Citrus Zest – This is extra but lovely, just microplane it in

  • Herbal Tea Bag – Just one bag of tea can add a lot of luxurious colors and lovely aromas

I recommend the following optional tools & appliances:

A bowl of Epsom salt.

Dried cannabis herb flowing out of a wooden box.

How to Mix It All Together

One of the simplest spells in my book, making canna-bath is my go-to for gifting, relaxing, healing…. and using up leftovers!

First things first: Let’s make an infused oil

  • To add neutral cannabinoids like THC, CBD, and CBG to your bath, you’ll need decarboxylated dried cannabis or hemp flowers or trims that are rich in those compounds.

  • Want to add acidic cannabinoids like THCa, CBDa, and CBGa to your bath? Use raw, un-decarboxylated dried cannabis or hemp with those cannabinoids.

  • Use 2-4 grams of cannabis per ounce of oil, potency of your oil will be around 300mg-600mg per ounce. Going to use the same oil for an edible? The dose will be between 10mg-20mg per ml at these quantities.

  • I use an Ardent FX to make my infusions because it’s a magical machine that is dead simple to use and makes my DIY work easy and enchanted! Just pop in your cannabis and oil and press “Infuse”. Come back in 45 minutes and strain out your oil into a glass jar with the Infusion Press accessory (Literally my FAVORITE).  Save your leftover, oil soaked plant matter for Raffinate Remix. Then, put EVERYTHING in the dishwasher and you’re done!

Second things second, let’s make a Canna-Bath:

  • Combine 2 cups/16 oz/1 lb of pre-scented (my preference) or unscented Epsom salts and mix in a bowl with 1 ounce of infused oil.

  • Using a kitchen stand mixer can help when making bigger batches.

Store in a glass jar or re-bag in the original package and make sure to label it as “infused”. Canning funnels can help things stay clean a this stage.

A wooden spoon of Epsom salt.

A woman in a bathtub with epsom salt, tincture and a cup of tea.

And you did it! Now let’s explore some fun ways to do this.

In a hurry? Never worry! Just do a Tincture Turnaround

1.    The Concept: Tincture + Epsom salts = Instant Canna-bath

2.    The How-to:

Need a Swift Gift? Smother Them with Layers of Love

Nothing says “I Care About You” like the luxurious gift of lovely layers of canna-bath. This recipe requires you have at least two different salts to layer together in a nice jar, and only one of them needs to be your infused salts. I’ve made this in as little at 10 minutes (see video below) and it’s always been a big SPLASH (lol).

My Best Tips

  • Use naturally pink Himalayan salt as a colorful layer with your infused epsom salt.

  • Pick pre-scented bath salts like rose, lavender, or eucalytpus to make this smell great and still be super simple for you to make. Otherwise, add essential oils for great smells.

  • Grab a funnel to make layering the salts in the gift jar clean and neat.

Are You a Fru-GAL-ista? Raffinate Remix is for You

Just can’t ever bring yourself to throw away your leftover plant matter (raffinate) from making oil infusions or your own concentrates? I got you, Boo. Honestly, this is the original reason I came up with canna-bath salts, too. I didn’t want to waste my raffinate, nor did I want pay dispensary store prices for tiny bags of infused Epsom salts I could make at home for practically free.

But let my plumbing lessons be yours… take the time to blend your raffinate or break it up in your food processor with some extra oil if needed to ensure the mixture doesn’t clog your drains (hear my story in the video below). Here’s what to do:

  1. Collect your leftover raffinate (oil-soaked plant matter that remains after you’ve strained your infusions) and combine with extra oil to cover in your blender or food processor.

  2. Blend or process until particles are very small and blended oil acts like a liquid and not like a paste. Add more oil if needed.

  3. Combine with Epsom salts at the rate of 1 oz oil per 2 cups/16 oz/1lb salts.

Optional: add essential oils or zest of 1 citrus fruit (microplaned) to suit if using unscented salts.

Optional: add contents of 1 herbal blend teabag per 2 cups of salts.

This is a beautiful way to use up your leftovers that doesn’t require any dosing! Also useful as a scrub, these baths can add a lot of health and stress release from your day and are so simple to make for practically free.

Keeping Clean & Safe

These baths are oily and will make your bathtub slick and possibly messy with plant bits so be aware and careful.

You can use a tea ball or herb sachet bag to minimize the mess.

I also use a handheld shower head to quickly spray my bathtub with warm water after bathing to help keep things tidier.
