Is Indica or Sativa Good or Bad in Edibles?

This Question Makes My Heart Hurt

Let’s be honest … most people have no cannabis education at all.

Their line of thinking is:

“Indica” will get me stoned and ‘in-da-couch’ and “Sativa” will make me super high and jittery.”

And I put “indica” and “sativa” in quotes there because in the minds of too many people those words equate to …

… “I know how to buy weed … ‘indicas for sleep’ … ‘sativas for creativity’ … pick up a “hybrid” when I just want to relax, oooh, buy these watermelon gummies and hope they work for my sleep … … check my phone 10 minutes after eating one… and then grab another gummy because this one isn’t working yet…. OH, NO! NOW I’M SO HIGH…”

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.  On SO many levels.

Cannabis Plant

First, let’s talk about this issue of “Indica” and “Sativa” which refer solely to the plant’s leaf shape and NOT to a product’s effects, even if they are labeled “pure sativa” or “pure indica”. Um, most plants today are hybrids… Like, 99% of them according to Canadian scientists.

Know this:  If you just stepped out of the dispensary with a bag full of stuff with these words on the labels, and privately high-fived yourself mentally afterward because you’re thinking that young budtender totally helped you buy all the right things that will absolutely work for you, PLEASE don’t fool yourself. The industry is already doing too much of that!

And on top of that, when buying edibles versus smokables or other inhaled products, well… the effects these words promise are EVEN LESS likely or predictable.

Stop equating “indica” and “sativa” with the EFFECTS you expect from your cannabis products.

(That should be posted in huge letters on every dispensary door … oh, but wait … those misleading words are SO INGRAINED with these effects that most people can’t choose products without them, never mind 🙂

Hey, they call it “lack of education” for a reason.

You’re buying really good, top shelf stuff, but so what?

Indica and Sativa only refer to the plant’s leaf shape. Really, I promise! This HARDLY matters at the “I’ll take the watermelon gummies for sleep” stage! But this popular and misguided marketing strategy that I like to call the “Bath Gel Aisle” makes the industry think these words can help you predict the EFFECT you’ll feel when ingesting a product is all perpetuating an old myth that has really got to go.

Those words won’t predict the effect at all.  It’s a lie that persists strongly to this day.  Part of my mission is wiping that out.

Only when you decide to stop buying cannabis like you’re walking down the “Bath Gel Aisle” is when you start to flex your cannabis education muscles to truly get the right products for the effects you ARE looking for.

That’s why I help my clients and students learn how to buy and use cannabis products truly formulated to produce the desired effects based on what really counts:

  • terpenes

  • cannabinoid profiles

  • the entourage effect

Finally stepping away from the “Bath Gel Aisle” is the result of what I provide in my Cannabis Concierge Service.

So let’s talk about what you REALLY want to accomplish with cannabis products, especially edibles…

Like, I said, just because you’ve experienced different effects cannabis products labeled “indica” or “sativa”… especially inhaled or smoked products like carts or flowers…  stoned and sleepy … or high and racy … or just happy and relaxed from something labeled “hybrid” …

… NONE of that matters when it comes to the vast majority of edibles.

Why?

Because what truly matters is the terpene & cannabinoid profile of your product. The vast majority of commercial ingestible products are formulated with tasteless, flavorless, single cannabinoid distillates and made into sweets and candies that can hardly provide these effects. Even edibles made at home can be low on terpenes depending on how it’s made.

Fine, if you like to use cannabis for sleep, then go get your “indica” pre-roll for before bed.  But at least pay attention to what cannabinoids and terpenes are present and if the product really makes you sedated by tracking. More and more companies are listing this info and it can help you know what works for you, because everyone is unique.

Jelly Gummy Bears

As Zig Ziglar once said, “What gets measured gets improved.”

Your consumption needs to have EFFECT goals.

Do you want to get more sleep and be more focused at home and work like my friend David, who used my service to go from being a total jerk to his doctor for a year about getting a CPAP machine…

…to now getting a good night’s rest every night using it with the help of a specially formulated nighttime tincture….

…and FINALLY having through the roof energy every morning all while scoring 100 nightly on his CPAP app…

Then you need to:

  • Forget ALL about “sativa” and “indica” and acknowledge that pretty much EVERYTHING is a hybrid.

  • Learn which CANNABINOIDS you’ll need for the effect you want: relaxed, sleepy, focused, happy…

  • know which TERPENE profiles are truly useful to YOU and which are a waste of your time and money… and use this information to buy INHALED products more than EDIBLE ones

  • track your progress and keep a log of your dosage

  • challenge the myths!

I help you with all of that in my Cannabis Concierge Service
